Boiler & Machinery Coverage

CNA´s Boiler & Machinery coverage -- also known as equipment breakdown insurance -- fills in the gaps in standard property policies by providing protection against the mechanical breakdown of boilers, heating/refrigeration systems and mechanical equipment. Many businesses with machinery and equipment exposures need boiler and machinery coverage including light manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, heavy manufacturing companies, chemical companies and utilities.

CNA´s boiler & machinery coverage's give you world-class products with one stop shopping -- you won't need to go to another company for this important coverage. And with CNA you get more than great coverage and a great price. You also get loss control experts who are deputized inspectors with the various states and can provide government mandated inspections at no additional costs.

Our boiler & machinery coverage's are available on a monoline and package basis. Our Equipment CoverAllSM package provides coverage for buildings up to $20 million in value.

Equipment breakdown coverage can be added to CNA´s Business Account Package Policy (BAPPSM) for small businesses or our TCPplus!SM policy for mid-sized businesses.

Boiler & Machinery Insurance Coverage

The machinery and equipment that helps your business run smoothly doesn't always run smoothly itself. Even with expert installation and regular maintenance, equipment occasionally breaks down: boilers crack, pipes rupture and electric motors can burn out. One machinery or electrical failure can shut down your entire business, costing you hundreds of thousands of dollars in costly repairs and lost productivity.

The protection you need for the breakdown of machinery and equipment that runs your physical plant or office building is usually excluded from your normal commercial property insurance. That is why boiler & machinery insurance from CNA is essential for your business. It is available to you as a mono-line policy or as an addition to many of our package policies including the TCPplus!SM and Business Account Package Policy (BAPPSM).

A Unique Policy that Covers Repair and Loss of Income

A boiler & machinery policy from CNA pays for the repair or replacement of your insured equipment, other property and the property of others for which you are liable. There is also automatic coverage for any new property that you acquire after your policy goes into effect. When you add a time element endorsement to your policy, you can be protected against loss of income and continuing expenses -- such as essential employees and utilities -- if business is suspended after a loss. You can also add an endorsement to provide coverage for immediate expenses if you have to change locations while repairs are being made.

Small business owners will want to learn more information about the Equipment CoverAllSM Policy from CNA.

Equipment CoverAllSM

Most Boiler & Machinery policies are pretty standard. But the Equipment CoverAllSM policy from CNA is both comprehensive and convenient. It´s comprehensive because it provides broad insurance coverage (with a $20 million policy limit) for small non-manufacturing and non-processing businesses with boiler and machinery equipment. It´s convenient because with just four pieces of information -- your name, the location of your business, the property value and your choice of standard or preferred coverage -- we have all the information we need to issue an Equipment CoverAllSM policy. No delays for inspections or lengthy underwriting activity.

Two Types of Coverage: Standard or Preferred

CNA provides two types of high quality coverage for expensive breakdowns of the equipment that maintains your premises or operations. With the standard form coverage (which is subject to a $250 minimum deductible) you are covered against damage to your property as a result of:

  • Explosion, implosion, cracking, rupture and meltdown of boilers, fired and unfired pressure vessels and piping

With the preferred form (which is subject to a $500 minimum deductible), coverage is broadened to include:

  • Any refrigeration or air conditioning system, telephone switchboards or computers
  • Any mechanical or electrical machine or apparatus used for the generation, transmission or utilization of mechanical or electrical power -- including utility owned transformers supplying power to your premises.

Equipment CoverAllSM also provides you with a unique feature -- all indirect coverages such as business interruption/extra expense and spoilage (of perishable goods) are automatically included in the policy.

Restaurants

Your restaurant business depends on systems like refrigeration, heating and cooling, computers and electricity to continue serving your customers.

But what happens when those systems break down?

Your equipment is expensive to repair, not to mention the loss of revenue, inventory and, most of all, customers. So how should you protect your business against this disaster?

You have property insurance, but did you know that your property insurance excludes such causes of loss as explosion of steam vessels, mechanical breakdown, electrical arcing, power surges and short circuits? The lost income, spoilage or extra expenses to get your business back up and running are also excluded if they are a result of those causes of loss.

You may have a maintenance or service contract, warranties or leased equipment. These are great to have, but are they enough? They will not pay for your loss of income, extra expenses or resulting spoilage.

Protect your business with an equipment breakdown policy:

  • Electrical Systems: Without electrical power you cannot run any equipment powered by electricity. A surge or short circuit could damage your business equipment.

  • Refrigeration Equipment: Without refrigeration systems you could suffer spoilage of refrigerated foods and beverages, frozen foods and ice.

  • Telephones, Computers and Cash Registers: You need phone systems for reservations or orders, cash registers, credit card authorization devices and many other systems run by computers.

  • Heating and Cooling Systems: Middle of August and no air conditioning? Middle of January and no heating?...No customers!

  • Steam Systems: What about those steam boilers or vessels that can cause significant damage should they explode? They may also require jurisdictional inspections by specialists licensed by the state to keep your business in compliance with state laws. CNA´s boiler & machinery loss control specialists can perform required inspections for policyholders.
Manufacturing

Your manufacturing business depends on equipment like production machines, computers, office equipment and electrical apparatus to continue manufacturing your products.

But what happens when that equipment breaks down?

Your equipment is expensive to repair, not to mention the loss of revenue, production and, most of all, finished goods. So how should you protect your business against this disaster?

You have property insurance, but did you know that your property insurance excludes such causes of loss as explosion of steam vessels, mechanical breakdown, electrical arcing, power surges, and short circuits? The lost income and extra expenses to get your business back up and running are also excluded if they are a result of those causes of loss.

You may have a maintenance or service contract, warranties, or leased equipment. These are great to have, but are they enough? They will not pay for your loss of income, extra expenses, equipment rentals or down time.

Protect your business with an equipment breakdown policy:

  • Electrical Systems: Without electrical power you cannot run any equipment powered by electricity. A surge or short circuit could damage your business equipment and production machines. And what about those machines that operate on their own transformers or generators?

  • Production Machinery and Computer-controlled Equipment: Without those presses, milling machines, compressors, and other production machines, your business is at a standstill. Many of today´s production machines are controlled by computers. These machines are sensitive to electrical distortions, humidity changes and dust that can cause them to shut down.

  • Heating and Cooling Systems: Every facility has atmosphere-controlling systems that can cause work stoppage when they are not functioning properly.

  • Steam Systems: What about those process steam boilers or vessels that can cause significant damage should they explode? They may also require jurisdictional inspections by specialists licensed by the state to keep your business in compliance with state laws. The state can shut down your business should you not be in compliance. CNA´s boiler & machinery loss control specialists can perform required inspections for policyholders.
Apartments/Condos

Your apartments and condominiums depend on systems like heating and cooling, computer-controlled equipment and electricity to continue serving your tenants.

But what happens when those systems break down?

Your equipment is expensive to repair, not to mention the possible loss of revenue, extra expense and, most of all, dissatisfied tenants. So how should you protect your business against this disaster?

You have property insurance, but did you know that your property insurance excludes such causes of loss as explosion of steam vessels, mechanical breakdown, electrical arcing, power surges and short circuits? The lost income or extra expenses incurred to get your apartments or condos back in running condition are also excluded if they are a result of those causes of loss.

You may have maintenance or service contracts, or warranties on your equipment. These are great to have, but are they enough? They will not pay for your loss of income or extra expenses while your equipment is being serviced or repaired.

Protect your business with an equipment breakdown policy:

  • Electrical Systems: Without electrical power you cannot run any equipment powered by electricity. A surge or short circuit could damage your equipment and make your property uninhabitable during repairs.

  • Elevators, Security Systems and Computer-controlled Equipment: Without your security or intercom systems, and common area lighting, your tenants won´t feel safe. Your elevator motors can break down, causing an inconvenience. You also have many other systems run by computers.

  • Heating and Cooling Systems: Middle of August and no air conditioning? Middle of January and no heating?...You´re going to have plenty of angry tenants!
